A Comparative Study of Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" and Yu Hua's "1986" —— Unraveling Bodily Narratives in Different Historical and Cultural Contexts

Abstract

This paper undertakes a comprehensive comparative study of Franz Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" and Yu Hua's "1986." By employing methods such as thematic juxtaposition, cultural interpretation, and symbolic analysis, it delves deeply into the similarities and differences in themes and artistic characteristics between these two works. The study focuses on how literary works portray special historical events and social changes during periods of social transformation, and it explores the commonalities and differences, as well as the meanings and values of bodily narratives in different historical periods and cultural contexts. Through this analysis, a deeper understanding of the power and significance of literature in reflecting and shaping human experience is achieved.
